El ensayo comienza con la relación de algunos hitos importantes en la historia de la Retórica: el desacuerdo entre sofistas y filósofos, la rehabilitación aristotélica, el dominio de la tradición platónica, y la nueva retórica de Perelman. La segunda parte describe los primeros pasos de la retórica de la ciencia, a través de Alan G. Gross y las ideas de David Locke. En la tercera sección se analiza el experimento mental del cortafuegos, producido en el contexto de la discusión sobre los agujeros negros. Se muestra que su razón de ser se justifica más allá de la mera ornamentación. Posteriormente, se discuten algunas posibles objeciones con respecto a los experimentos mentales en ciencias naturales, particularmente su utilidad y adecuación al marco empírico y teórico. Asimismo, se muestran dos grados de escepticismo y la posibilidad de su eliminación. Finalmente, se proponen motivos para seguir una retórica revolucionaria y abandonar la reglamentaria.

ABSTRACT

The essay begins with the account of some important milestones in the History of Rhetoric: the disagreement between sophists and philosophers, the Aristotelian rehabilitation, the predominance of the Platonic tradition, as well as Perelman’s new rhetoric. The second part reveals the first steps of the Rhetoric of Science, through Alan G. Gross and the ideas of David Locke. In the third section, the firewall thought-experiment, produced in the context of the black holes discussion, is analyzed. It is shown that its raison d'être is justified beyond mere ornamentation. Subsequently, some possible objections with respect to thought-experiments in natural sciences are discussed, particularly its usefulness and appropriateness to the empirical and theoretical framework. Also, two degrees of skepticism and the possibility of their elimination are considered. Finally, some reasons are proposed to follow a revolutionary rhetoric and to abandon the official one.
